Objectives : Co-ordination of the project, involving :
1.1 Growth of and preparation of DNA from selectec reference Leishmania stocks representative of taxonomic problems ; 1.2 workshop organisation

Workpackage number : 2
Partners : 1
Objectives : Organisation, maintenance and improvement of database

Workpackage number : 3
Partners : 1 . 2 . 4
Objectives : DNA sequence of selected DNA targets. I. Protein and RNA coding genes.

Workpackage number : 4
Partners : 1 . 2 . 8
Objectives : DNA sequence of selected DNA targets. II. Non-coding genomic regions.
1. Intergenic regions 2. Microsatellites 3. Anonymous markers

Workpackage number : 5
Partners : 1 . 6
Objectives : The main objective will be validation of molecular typing by allozyme typing for each Leishmania
Isolate. A complementary objective will be comparison between two allozyme typing system (MON and LON).

Workpackage number : 6
Partners : 1 . 2 . 3 . 7
Objectives : Phylogenetic analysis and definition of markers, involving :
1. Construction of phylogenies from DNA sequence and allozyme data
2. Comparison of DNA-based with allozyme-based phylogenies.
3. Identification of group specific genetic markers.

Workpackage number : 7

Partners : 1 . 2 . 3 . 4 . 6 . 7 . 8
Objectives : Collection of clinical and veterinary samples from European foci.

Workpackage number : 9
Partners : 3 . 4 . 5 . 6
Objectives : Preliminary quality control of typing methods to include : determination of preliminary reproducibilities, sensitivities and specificities of the methods with biological samples.

Workpackage number : 10
Partners : 1 . 3 . 5 . 8
Objectives : Application of markers to clinical and epidemiological problems, including :
1. evaluation of feasibility of population studies with new genetic markers, such as :
- analysis of genetic diversity and transmission routes of isolates from immunocompromised host ;
- analysis of gene flow in selected zoonotic sympatric European foci.
2. identification of origin of imported cases.
3. identification of drug resistance markers.
